Ten step guide on how to start a business.

Most times when we people think of starting a business, the first thing that hits them is a sudden overwhelm of what it would mean before they even get going.
Many of my clients have told me that the advice they have gotten is to just start! while this maybe right, and an advice to help stop procrastination, it may not always be the right advice as there are a few things to think and consider before you start a business.

Starting a business can be an exciting and rewarding venture and one way to start a business with less overwhelm is from your home. Starting as small as possible if needed but this can offer flexibility and cost-saving advantages

Here is a ten-list guide, by no means exhaustive:

  1. Start with an idea: Identify a product or service that you are passionate about and that is in demand in the market but also consider your skills, interests, and resources available to you. But then make sure you are passionate about whatever you make your product or service. The success of your business starts with your conviction and passion in your product or service.
  2. Conduct market research: Conduct market research to understand the demand for your product or service, your target audience, competition, and potential challenges. This will help you tailor your offerings and marketing strategy.
  3. Develop your product or service: If you’re offering a product, create prototypes and conduct product testing. For service-based businesses, ensure you have the necessary skills and tools in place to provide quality services. Your business idea must be Clear and compelling. People need to know:
  • This is what it is.
  • This is what it is for.
  • This is how it works.
  • These are the results.
  1. Set up your workspace: Designate a specific area in your home as your workspace. Make sure it is equipped with the necessary tools, equipment, and resources to run your business effectively. This is also to create a mental shift when you step into the space, that it is time to work.
  2. Develop a business plan: Create a comprehensive business plan that outlines your goals, strategies, marketing approach, financial projections, and operational details. It will serve as a roadmap for your business and will help you stay focused and organized.
  1. Determine your business structure / Registration: Registering your business may be required depending on your location and the type of business you plan to operate. Check with your local government to find out the necessary permits and licenses. Decide whether you want to operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation. Consult with legal and financial advisors to determine the best option for your business.
  2. Set up your finances: Open a business bank account and establish a bookkeeping system to manage your finances. If needed, secure funding through loans, investors, or personal savings.
  3. Establish an online presence: Create a website and set up social media accounts to promote your business and connect with potential customers. Utilize effective marketing strategies to reach your target audience. You do not want your business to be the best keep secret!
  4. Network and seek support: Join industry associations or networking groups both online and offline. Connect with other entrepreneurs, attend workshops, and seek advice from mentors to learn from their experiences and gain insights.
